Internet cable may have stopped Tokyo trains

Posted by Junichi Kawagoe on 24.2010 News Out of English Newspaper   0 comments   0 trackback
Railway officials in Tokyo say a dangling Internet cable may have caused the power failure that halted trains for up to 3 and a half hours on Tuesday evening.

East Japan Railway Company says the blackout at Mejiro station in central Tokyo put 60 trains out of service on the Yamanote, Saikyo and Shonan Shinjuku lines, inconveniencing about 260,000 passengers.

The firm says a 50-meter section of a cable for a wireless Internet antenna near the Yamanote line tracks became tangled with the overhead power lines.

It says the driver of a train that was passing the station saw something hit his front window.

East Japan Railway says it will conduct an emergency inspection of all cables at its stations that offer wireless Internet access.
