Obama signs health care reform bill into law

US President Barack Obama has signed into law a landmark healthcare reform bill.

A signing ceremony was held at the White House on Tuesday, two days after the House of Representatives narrowly approved the bill.

He was joined by Democratic legislators and other supporters.

Obama said he was signing the bill for all the leaders who took up this cause through the generations.
He cited the names of Democrat Presidents -- Theodore and Franklyn Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Lyndon Johnson and Bill Clinton -- and his wife Hillary.

After signing the bill, Obama gave another speech at the Interior Department. Speaking before a crowd including labor and health care groups, Obama said this is not his victory but their victory and a victory of the United States of America.

The new legislation is designed to provide assistance to middle and low-income groups, and to regulate insurance company practices such as denying coverage to people with medical problems. The legislation would extend insurance coverage to 32 million people out of the 46 million uninsured.

Polls show that the nation is split over healthcare reform, and there are strong feelings among opponents that the legislation will impose a burden on many people. Healthcare reform has been Obama's top priority since taking office. He hopes to gain momentum from his achievement to exercise strong leadership in both domestic and foreign policies.
