Tokyo ward chief to take childcare leave

Posted by Junichi Kawagoe on 12.2010 News Out of English Newspaper   0 comments   0 trackback
The head of Tokyo's Bunkyo Ward has announced that he will take paternity leave in April to help care for his newborn son.

44-year-old Hironobu Narisawa said he will take off from April 3rd to 15th and use the nearly 2-week leave to help care for his first baby born on February 5th.

But he said he will attend special committee meetings at the ward assembly and has no plan to appoint an acting chief.

In Japan, childcare leave for local government chiefs is not institutionalized.

And it is unusual for a ward chief to be absent from public duty because of childrearing.

Narisawa says he hopes his paternity leave prompts other ward employees to follow suit as no males have yet taken time off for childcare, citing fears of economic loss and a negative effect on their careers.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair was in the media spotlight when he took paternity leave following the birth of his 4th child.
