Image of tsunami surging in northern Japanese town

Video footage has been taken depicting tsunami waves surging into a street in Kesen-numa City, Miyagi Prefecture, northern Japan, following Saturday's massive earthquake off Chile.

NHK has obtained a video a local man started shooting at 4:07 PM, Japanese Standard Time, on Sunday. The video shows sea water inundating the road in about 40 seconds.

The man said he was about to leave a 4-story building near a fish market, when he realized there was a change in the sea level and he started taking the video images.

The city's tide gauge recorded a change of 1.2 meters.
His colleague, who also took video footage, said the tsunami continued coming into the street for about 5 minutes.

They said the street was more than 30 centimeters deep in water when they left the building an hour later.

Analyzing the video footage, Nobuo Shuto, professor emiritus of Tohoku University confirmed that some parts of the water from the tsunami displayed the phenomenon of " jumping water" near the fish market in Kesen-numa City.

Shuto says the phenomenon takes place on the border between a down-hill slope where water flows rapidly and a flat place where the water flow slows down. He says such jumping water is dangerous enough to sweep people away.

Shuto says people should pay attention not only to the height of a tsunami, but also to its speed and power.

He said that a person was swept away and killed by tsunami waves of below knee-high depth in the 1983 tsunami in central Japan.

The expert stressed that people should be evacuated, even if the tsunami is forecast to reach only 10 centimeters high.
