Refueling mission is pulling out of Indian Ocean

Two Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force ships have begun pulling out of the Indian Ocean, ending an 8-year-long refueling mission for US-led coalition vessels.

The mission's commander, Captain Ryo Sakai, notified the crew of the tanker that the mission had ended at midnight on Friday, when the law that authorizes the mission expired.

Prior to ending the mission, the tanker provided fuel one last time to a Pakistani naval vessel in the Arabian Sea in the north of the Indian Ocean.

Sakai told the crew members to remain vigilant until they enter the ships' home port in Japan. He said they will use the experience gained in the Indian Ocean in taking on another mission.
The refueling mission started in 2001. It provided a total of 510,000 kiloliters of fuel worth 264 million dollars to naval ships of 12 countries, including the United States.

The tanker and a destroyer are expected to return to Japan in early February.
