Australia calls for restraint by Japan, protestors

Posted by Junichi Kawagoe on 07.2010 News Out of English Newspaper   0 comments   0 trackback
Australia's Environment Minister has urged both Japan and the anti-whaling Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to show restraint.

The comment follows the collision of the Sea Shepherd's speedboat the Ady Gil and the Japanese whaling vessel Shonan Maru No.2 in Antarctic waters. The speedboat was damaged beyond repair and one of its crew was reportedly injured seriously.

Environment Minister Peter Garrett told reporters on Wednesday that Australia condemns any violent or dangerous activity that takes place in the remote Antarctic waters. He said that safety in the waters must be the foremost priority.

Garrett reiterated Australia's anti-whaling stance, saying the nation opposes whaling in the Antarctic even if it is being conducted in the name of research.

However, he ruled out dispatching Australian naval vessels to halt Japanese research whaling as requested by the Sea Shepherd group.
