Online video helps police arrest man for speeding

Japanese police have arrested a man for speeding after analyzing a video clip posted on the Internet.

The 42-year-old company worker, Hiroaki Iwahashi, of Wakayama Prefecture, western Japan, was allegedly riding a motorbike at 188 kilometers an hour in August. The speed limit for the road was 50 kilometers an hour. He has reportedly admitted to the charges.

Police say they were informed of the video clip in September and tracked down the person who put it online. They found that Iwahashi was riding a motorcycle that belonged to the man who posted the video.

They say this is the first time that they have made an arrest using an online video as evidence.

Princess Aiko unable to go to school

Posted by Junichi Kawagoe on 05.2010 News Out of English Newspaper   0 comments   0 trackback
Japan's Imperial Household Agency says the Crown Prince's daughter, Princess Aiko, has been reluctant to go to school for most of the week due, apparently, to bad behavior by some boys from another class.

The 8-year-old princess is in the second grade of Gakushuin Primary School in Tokyo.

She missed a number of days last week due to a slight fever and stayed home for most of this week, although she attended class on Tuesday.

The princess has reportedly been anxious about going to school and is said to be complaining of stomachache.

The Grand Master of the Crown Prince's Household, Issei Nomura, spoke about the matter at a news conference on Friday.

He said that after consulting the school to find the reason, it was learned that boys from another class in the same grade had shown unruly behavior.

The Imperial Household Agency says it has asked the school to take corrective steps and that the school is starting to take measures. But the agency says it cannot tell when Princess Aiko might resume attending school.

Nomura said the Crown Prince and Princess have been talking with their daughter to ease her fears. He said it is a pity that an incident like this has happened at Gakushuin, which has been attended by many members of the Imperial family.

Officials at Gakushuin told a news conference on Friday that they have not heard that the princess has personally been attacked or bullied.

They said that as the princess was about to leave school around noon on Tuesday, boys from another class heading for lunch suddenly jumped out in front of her.

The officials said the case may have made the princess recall another incident in July last year, when several boys behaved badly, throwing their bags, shouting and running down corridors.

They said the school began monitoring the boys closely, by placing assistant teachers in their class. They said things calmed down around November, so the measures were ended when a new term began in January.

The officials said they plan to communicate better with students and parents when the new school year begins in April to ensure discipline is maintained.

China projects 8% growth in 2010

Posted by Junichi Kawagoe on 05.2010 News Out of English Newspaper   0 comments   0 trackback
China has sets its economic growth target for this year at around 8 percent.

Premier Wen Jiabao made the announcement when he outlined policies for the year in an annual report to China's parliament, the National People's Congress, which opened on Friday.

Wen said China promises to continue its active financial policies and keep up its strong growth, while aiming to hold urban unemployment below 4.6 percent to maintain social stability.

He said rural areas have great potential for development and added that the government plans to raise farmers' incomes and expand their spending by helping them find jobs and start businesses.

Wen also emphasized the government's determination to curb soaring house prices in response to growing concerns over a real-estate bubble.

He expressed the government's wariness about an overheating of the economy and inflation, saying that it will hold consumer price increases this year to around 3 percent.

Wen said China is facing a complicated situation for its economic management policies, with overproduction and high unemployment at home.

He said the foundation for a global economic recovery remains fragile, and that governments are facing tough decisions on whether or not to end their economic stimulus measures.
